There are 5 main types of materials that pallets are usually made from. These are:

1. Softwood - softwood pallets are very cheap and are therefore considered expendable pallets. They are usually lift able from two sides.

2. Hardwood - these are still affordable but are more expensive and durable. For this reason, they can usually be resold for use on sites like http://www.premierpallet.co.uk/. Wooden pallets are susceptible to rot and contamination with bacteria or chemicals.

3. Paper pallets - these are typically only used for light loads. They are light-weight, eco-friendly, cleaner, and safer than other material options. Engineered paper pallets can be used for heavier loads.

4. Steel pallets - these are very strong and durable and as such are used for extremely heavy or important loads. The types of steel used can range from carbon and stainless steels to aluminium. They are often expensive and heavy and as such are only used for specialist industries such as in the military and pharmaceutical industries.

5. Plastics - these are very durable and exempt from bio-safety concerns. They are usually made from recycled drink-bottle plastics or HDPE. They are durable and are widely used.

Of all the above, the most popular material used in pallets in Southampton, and probably most other places too, is wood.
